I think it would be safe to re-chamber a Bren barrel but what about the way it locks it to the trunnion.

I swear I read it somewhere.... i'll have to look, it was just for ease of production that they were changed....
Informative links... http://izhevsk.club.guns.ru/eng/pkm This doesn't say they are the same but it also doesn't say they are different. The barrel is the easiest way to distinguish the PK and its modernized variation, the PKM. The PK has heavier, fluted barrel, while the PKM barrel is lighter (it weighs 2.35 kg and has no longitudinal grooves). The armored vehicle variations PKT/PKTM and PKB/PKBM have even heavier barrels, better suited to the sustained fire role. Like most other small arms of Com-Bloc origin, the PK family barrels have chrome-plated bores and chambers. The PKM bore has four grooves with a right-hand twist of one turn in 225 mm. The barrel length is 602 mm, which doesn't include the flash hider or any other muzzle device. The muzzle has a left-hand metric M18 x 1.5 thread to mount a flash hider or a blank firing adapter. There is an AK-type spring-loaded plunger to hold the muzzle device in correct position. There exists at least two different PK-series flash hiders. Earlier and most common type is similar to the M14 flash hider with five longitudinal slots. More recent model is shorter and conical, also having five slots. Barrel have a pivoted handle, which can be used as the lever to crank the barrel out from its housing. http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=30071 Turbothis was the one working with the vickers barrels http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=89338 Additionally, this, though a blog, was also interesting... he biggest difference is the new barrel, which is easy to spot, do to the fact that it is smooth and does not have flutes in it to aid cooling, like the one for the PK. This was done to lighten the weight of the gun and the new barrel weighs less. Also a new new flash suppressor started to appear about this time http://penguinspkm.wordpress.com/pkm/ Then there is this article and on page 50 makes no mention, but does not discount either... though one would think if it were not mentioned, it would not be a problem? http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=11153 There are some other links as well, but I don't have the time to go through the russian sites as of now... |

Actually, the .303 British, 7.7 Japanese, and the 7.62X54R all use .311 bullets in their loads. That is why it is so easy to rechamber a Bren barrel to the 54R cartridge.
